There’s something I wish more parents understood before their kids became teenagers:
You probably won’t know when the last time happens.
The last time they reach for your hand when you’re walking somewhere. The last time they crawl into your lap without thinking about it. The last summer with that little-kid smile. The last year before the braces go on—or come off. The last time your son lets you fix his hair. The last time your daughter snuggles into you exactly the way she does right now.
Childhood doesn’t disappear all at once.
It happens quietly.
And then one day you look at your child and wonder, When did you get so big?
After more than 20 years of photographing families in Telluride, Ridgway and throughout the San Juan Mountains, I think this is one of the biggest reasons family photography matters. Not because you need another perfectly posed family photograph.
Because you need to remember who you were together.
When I photograph a family, of course I want to create that beautiful portrait where everyone is together. But I'm watching for so much more than that. I'm watching the way your daughter still leans into you. How your son looks at his dad. The siblings who can drive each other completely crazy one minute and have each other laughing the next. The way your kids love their grandparents. The way your youngest still fits perfectly in your arms. The dog who has been beside them for most of their childhood.
Those are the photographs I want you to have.
Because those relationships are changing right along with them.
